Haiyan 2 Years Later: Environmental & Social Justice in the Philippines

Sunday, Nov 8, 5 – 7:30pm @ Filipino Food & Bakery (2852 Main St, San Diego, CA 92113)

Two years after the destruction of Haiyan, another devastating storm has hit the Philippines, Typhoon Koppu. How much have the areas most touched in 2013 been able to rebuild and handle yet another onslaught? How do greater issues of environmental justice, governmental corruption, capitalist penetration, and lingering neocolonialism profoundly hinder people-centered recovery in the islands? Ultimately, how are larger questions of social justice, including the marginalization of indigenous populations, deeply linked to the environmental disasters of the Philippines?

Please join us for an evening that takes a close and critical look at the islands two years later with report backs from local community members who have just returned from an exposure mission in the areas heaily affected by Haiyan. We’ll also honor the lives loss with cultural performances and raise funds for both the victims of Haiyan and now Koppu. Your attendance and generous donations are deeply appreciated. This event is part of the national day of action organized by the Kapit Bisig Kabataan Network.

*Participating organizations include: the Kuya Ate Mentorship Program, AnakBayan San Diego, and San Diego 350.

ABSD & KAMP’s Mic Check! Typhoon Relief Fundraiser

WHEN: December 14, 6-9 PM
WHERE: Filipino Food & Bakery, 2852 Main St.

The one year anniversary of typhoon Haiyan has just passed and yet another life threatening typhoon is hitting the same area. Anakbayan San Diego (ABSD) and the Kuya Ate Mentorship Program (KAMP) invite you to an open mic with DJ Olibata of Elevated Masses supporting the struggles of our people who are still suffering from the effects of Haiyan, Hagupit, and other natural disasters.

There will be a $5-$20 sliding scale suggested donation at the door, although no one will be turned away due to lack of funds. All proceeds will benefit the Natioinal Alliance for Filipino Concerns (NAFCON) Typhoon Relief Program.

NAFCON is a national multi-issue alliance of Filipino organizations and individuals in the United States serving to protect the rights and welfare of Filipinos by fighting for social, economic, and racial justice and equality.
