mic check hosts

On December 14 at Filipino Food and Bakery, KAMP and AnakBayan San Diego (ABSD) teamed up to present Mic Chek, an open mic fundraiser calling attention to the one-year anniversary of Typhoon Haiyan’s landfall that coincided with Typhoon Hagupit hitting the region. Hosted by two of KAMP’s newest and coolest mentors, Ate Sara and Kuya John, the event featured poetry, song, dance, audience-generated haikus, and important updates on efforts at rebuilding and rehabilitation in the areas most affected by Haiyan. ABSD kasamas gave short but very informative presentations on the areas affected by Haiyan as well as the failure of the Aquino administration to provide much needed resources; ABSD, however, also reported ¬†on the efforts of the National Alliance of Filipino Concerns (NAFCON) and the Kapit Bisig Kabataan Network (KBKN) to empower local organizations to rebuild according to a vision of self-determination and social equity. All proceeds from the evening were directly donated to NAFCON. Together, KAMP and ABSD were able to raise almost $500 in one night. Thank you to everyone who came out!
